Health Insurance Company Scaring Patients to Avoid the ED

POSTED IN: Featured Advocacy,

The health insurance giant (Anthem BCBS) is enforcing a policy in 3 states (Georgia, Kentucky and Missouri) that says if certain diagnoses don’t meet their standards of an emergency, they may refuse to pay – leaving policyholders on the hook for the entire ER bill. ACEP and MOCEP are fighting this – saying – it puts patients at risk because many symptoms can be either non urgent or life-threatening, plus it’s a violation of federal law that says health insurance companies must base payment on a patient’s presenting symptoms, not their final diagnosis.

Please pass this video from ACEP on to others. Also if you have stories of Anthem rejecting patient’s claims based on discharge diagnosis, please send those cases to us.
