Michael Szewczyk, MD, FACEP, Receives MOCEP’s Lifetime Achievement Award

Michael Szewczyk, MD, FACEP, was selected to receive the 2021 Missouri College of Emergency Physicians’ (MOCEP) Lifetime Achievement Award. He was nominated by Douglas Char, MD, FACEP, of Washington University in St. Louis. The award will be presented to Dr. Szewczyk at the MOCEP Annual General Membership Meeting on May 27, 2021, in Columbia, Mo.

Dr. Szewczyk is Medical Director of Employee Health at Boone Hospital in Columbia, Mo. He is a graduate of Rush Medical College, Chicago, Ill., and completed his residency program at Charleston Area Medical Center in West Virginia.

A man of many roles, Dr. Szewczyk also serves as an Occupational Health and Safety Program Physician at University of Missouri – Columbia; Occupational Medicine Physician for Columbia Public Schools; Occupational Medicine Physician for the City of Columbia; and Clinic Director of Occupational Medicine of Mid-Missouri. His expertise doesn’t stop there, as he has served his community for many years including as a member of the City of Columbia/Boone County Board of Health for 33 years; and a member of the Board of Directors for the Visiting Nurse Association/Boone Home Health Care for 29 years.

Leader, role model, mentor, devoted and commitment are just a few words used to describe Dr. Szewczyk by his peers. He not only gives generously of his time to his community, but he was instrumental in the development of MOCEP and served on the Board of Directors for three decades. He served MOCEP in the roles of president, then as treasurer for 12 years, all the while encouraging representation of all emergency physicians in Missouri and showing young physicians support in many ways, including how to advance their careers and the specialty through involvement in the College. Dr. Szewczyk is the embodiment of this award and we are proud to be able to present this to him at our upcoming meeting.

The MOCEP Lifetime Achievement Award, requires the nominee to be a MOCEP member who has at least 25 years of service to emergency medicine, has devoted their professional life to the improvement of this specialty, and has played an active role in MOCEP.
