What does your program offer that residents can’t get anywhere else?

Our program provides top-notch emergency medicine education and delivers superior healthcare to the community of Saint Louis. Our three-year training program challenges residents to achieve their best in a well-resourced academic environment and produces highly trained emergency physicians regionally and nationally. We have a very high volume of complex, critically ill patients, in addition to high volumes of blunt and penetrating trauma. Our residents also receive extensive exposure to critical procedures. Our residents learn from and work alongside attendings with Education, Community, Simulation, Global Health, and Critical Care backgrounds. Our program has an affiliated Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship and a Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship. Saint Louis University Emergency Medicine has partnered with the United States Air Force as a residency training program for Operational Emergency Medicine. We are proud that Saint Louis University serves a very diverse population and acts as a healthcare safety net for the population of Saint Louis. Our hospital is in the heart of downtown St. Louis near attractions such as Busch Stadium, Union Station, City Park, Forest Park, and the historic Gateway Arch.

What is the work-life balance like?

Our residency program emphasizes a strong focus on maintaining a healthy work-life balance among our residents. ED shifts are eight hours long with a one-hour overlap, allowing for time before or after shifts to focus on life outside of work. We also have bi-annual Resident Wellness Retreats, seasonal holiday parties, monthly journal clubs, and monthly Wellness/Social outings with our entire ED staff. We promote a feeling of family at Saint Louis University.
