Lynthia (Lindy) Andrews Bowman, DO, FACEP, was selected to receive the 2024 Missouri College of Emergency Physicians’ (MOCEP) R.R. Hannas Physician of the Year Award. She was nominated by her peer, John Owen, MD, both located in the Northwest Missouri region. The award will be presented to Dr. Andrews at the Missouri Emergency Medicine Symposium April 5, 2024, at the Stoney Creek Inn in Independence, Mo.

Dr. Andrews is an emergency medicine physician at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Mo. She completed her undergraduate at the University of Missouri – Kansas City before obtaining her Doctor of Osteopathy from the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1980. Dr. Andrews continued her education with a master’s in healthcare administration from the University of Phoenix.

Dr. Andrews has spent a lifetime pushing emergency medicine in Missouri forward through her numerous roles as an Emergency Physician, regional and local EMS directorships, and numerous organization memberships. She became a Missouri College of Emergency Physicians (MOCEP) board member over twenty years ago when the field of medicine was still striving to define itself and has led the organization and her specialty to prominence. In her tenure, she has also assisted the organization in building strong ties with other state associations and departments including Missouri EMS Association, Missouri Ambulance Association, Missouri Hospital Association, as well as Department of Health and Senior Services. In her latest project, Dr. Andrews has brought together data analysts, researchers, and state officials in an effort to gather together meaningful data collection, aggregation, and reports. This work will make Missouri a leader in the nation once it is completed.

A steadfast leader in the field of emergency medicine, Dr. Andrews has not looked for credit or accolades throughout her career despite honors bestowed upon her. Former Governor Holden recognized her dedication to EMS and appointed her to the State Advisory Council on EMS in 2004. Former Governor Blunt continued this honor by then appointing Dr. Andrews to serve as chair of the Council in 2006. Through these appointments, Dr. Andrews has worked tirelessly to promote better patient care from the point of contact to discharge.

The R.R. Hannas Award is presented to an emergency medicine physician and resident each year, and is named after Dr. Ralston R. Hannas, a “founding father” of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Hannas is a past president of the American College of Emergency Physicians and was the co-organizer, with Dr. Wiegenstein, of the first Scientific Assembly in 1969. He was also chairman of the committee that founded the American Board of Emergency Medicine, served on the Board for twelve years and was the organization’s fourth president. Dr. Hannas was also instrumental in helping organize the fifth Emergency Medicine residency program in the country, at Northwestern University, in 1973. In 1976 he moved to Kansas City where he practiced emergency medicine for 21 years.
