Health Policy Fellowship

MOCEP Liaison: Marc Mendelsohn, MD

Time Frame:  1 year: For the first program year the fellowship will be January – December. Subsequent years will be August to July.

  • Identify individuals with the potential to become leaders in emergency medicine;
  • Provide orientation and skills to allow potential leaders to promote emergency medicine locally and nationally including developing messaging for legislators and media
  • Facilitate the promotion of fellowship graduates into leadership positions both locally and nationally.
  • Understand the legislative process and how emergency medicine physicians can actively participate in it and increase their advocacy efforts
  • Must be a current member of MOCEP;
  • Resident in Emergency medicine or senior medical student;
  • Ideally would have an interest in health policy
  • Work with MOCEP leadership and lobbyists on yearly advocacy goals.
  • Review current policy issues identified as priorities by MOCEP.
  • Identify how policy changes affect the profession of Emergency Medicine.
  • Create monthly summary statements of legislative efforts pertinent to emergency medicine.
  • Attend Advocacy Day at Missouri state capital (March)
  • If available participate in testimony procedures
  • Attend MOCEP board meetings (if not in person than virtually)
  • Attend ACEP Leadership and Advocacy Conference (Spring)
  • If a resident, deliver a lecture to your residency program discussing being an advocate
  • Write articles based on your experience in the MOCEP newsletter
  • Create a “message” and talking points on a common / current emergency medicine issue (clinical or policy) designed for legislators, press, public audiences

Benefits:

Travel, hotel and registration at ACEP Leadership & Advocacy Conference (Spring) will be included. Mileage reimbursement for visits to the Missouri Capitol during Legislative Session, not to exceed three visits from January through May.

Participation Selection:

  • MOCEP Board of Directors will review and select the Fellow based on applications received by January 15;
  • Selected fellows will be notified by MOCEP by January 31st.
