Joseph Gatewood, MD, FACEP, was selected to receive the 2019 Missouri College of Emergency Physicians’ (MOCEP) Lifetime Achievement Award. He was nominated by Douglas Char, MD FACEP, and Brian Bausano, MD FACEP, all of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. The award will be presented to Dr. Gatewood at the MOCEP Annual General Membership Meeting on May 22, 2019, in St. Louis.
Dr. Joseph Gatewood is “… the epitome of a community emergency physician, who through his dedication and longstanding efforts has improved emergency care in Missouri and raised the profile of Emergency Medicine as a specialty within our region,” say his nominators.
Dr. Gatewood originally trained in Internal Medicine in Montreal, Quebec in 1976. He began practicing Emergency Medicine immediately and became ABEM board certified in 1981. He became an oral examiner for ABEM only three years after achieving board certification and continues in this role today.
His long career includes having worked in over eight different hospital emergency departments within the St. Louis region. He has been an academic clinician (Washington University, St Louis University and the University of Colorado), Medical Director (Director of Risk Management) for Spectrum Emergency Care, and served as its Chief Medical Officer. He gave up administrative duties in 1994 and has been “pit doc” for the past 24 years.
He volunteers his time as an ACLS and ATLS instructor, and remains an active teacher. He served on the St. Louis Chapter AHA Board of Directors for 13 years. He has published on the business of Emergency Medicine and was section editor of the ACEP Risk Management Review.
Dr. Gatewood also has strong ties to the Missouri Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Not only did he serve for a half of a decade on its board, but he stayed active at the national level by representing Missouri Emergency Physicians’ and patients’ interests as an ACEP Councilor.
Quite simply, Dr. Joseph Gatewood has been caring for the patients of Missouri and the St. Louis region for the entirety of his career and through his longevity, quality clinical care and administrative acumen, has gained a superb reputation amongst his peers.
It is the honor of MOCEP to provide the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award to an outstanding emergency department physician. Criteria to be nominated for this award require the nominee to be a MOCEP member who has at least 25 years of service to emergency medicine, has devoted their professional life to the improvement of this specialty, and has played an active role in MOCEP.
