Sonya Naganathan, MD, Receives MOCEP R.R. Hannas Resident of the Year Award

Sonya Naganathan, MD, was selected to receive the 2019 Missouri College of Emergency Physicians’ (MOCEP) R.R. Hannas Resident of the Year Award. She was nominated by her peer, Kristen Mueller, MD, from the Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University Emergency Medicine Resident Program. The award will be presented to Dr. Naganathan at the MOCEP Annual General Membership Meeting on May 22, 2019, in St. Louis, Mo.

Dr. Naganathan is a graduate of The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences in Toledo, Ohio, and is currently a PGY-4. Her professional activities and memberships include serving as a member of the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement House Staff Council, engaged in injury prevention through the Washington University Gun Violence Initiative, and has developed a quality improvement project on Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM).

Dr. Naganathan was nominated for her abilities in skills and knowledge base, excellence in every facet of patient care, including compassion and comprehensive care of the critically ill. She is a team player and interacts well with nurses and ancillary staff, and is a great teaching resource for junior emergency medicine residents.

Additionally, during her tenure at Washington University, Dr. Naganathan has developed clinical excellence in the care of emergency department patients, and shows continued drive to succeed in the care of high-risk populations. She has been instrumental in the development and ongoing evaluation of prospective quality improvement CALM pilot project in the Barnes Jewish Hospital Emergency Department.

The R.R. Hannas Award is presented to an emergency medicine physician and resident each year, and is named after Dr. Ralston R. Hannas, a “founding father” of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Hannas is a past president of the American College of Emergency Physicians and was the co-organizer, with Dr. Wiegenstein, of the first Scientific Assembly in 1969. He was also chairman of the committee that founded the American Board of Emergency Medicine, served on the Board for twelve years and was the organization’s fourth president. Dr. Hannas was also instrumental in helping organize the fifth Emergency Medicine residency program in the country, at Northwestern University, in 1973. In 1976 he moved to Kansas City where he practiced emergency medicine for 21 years.
