Timothy Havens, MD, was selected to receive the 2019 Missouri College of Emergency Physicians’ (MOCEP) R.R. Hannas Physician of the Year Award. He was nominated by her peer, Katrina Wade, MD, both of Saint Louis University. The award will be presented to Dr. Havens at the MOCEP Annual General Membership Meeting on May 22, 2019, in St. Louis, Mo.

Dr. Havens is Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. He is a graduate of Saint Louis University School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency program. His personality and ability to connect with patients is just one of the reasons he was nominated for this award. He has an innate ability to put patients at ease, provide comfort and develop instant trust with them, all while providing empathetic care. He has become one of the most sought-after physicians in his Emergency Department with patients asking for him by name.

Additionally, he is well-respected as both a colleague and an educator. He has been instrumental in making improvements and enhancing the education for residents; has volunteered his expertise in Oral Board Preparation, Resident Performance Improvement, and has come up with innovative “remediation” interventions before a resident truly needs remediation.

The R.R. Hannas Award is presented to an emergency medicine physician and resident each year, and is named after Dr. Ralston R. Hannas, a “founding father” of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Hannas is a past president of the American College of Emergency Physicians and was the co-organizer, with Dr. Wiegenstein, of the first Scientific Assembly in 1969. He was also chairman of the committee that founded the American Board of Emergency Medicine, served on the Board for twelve years and was the organization’s fourth president. Dr. Hannas was also instrumental in helping organize the fifth Emergency Medicine residency program in the country, at Northwestern University, in 1973. In 1976 he moved to Kansas City where he practiced emergency medicine for 21 years.
