Jason Wagner, MD, FACEP, was selected to receive the 2020 Missouri College of Emergency Physicians’ (MOCEP) R.R. Hannas Physician of the Year Award. He was nominated by his peer, Brent Ruoff, MD, FACEP, both of Barnes-Jewish/Washington University. The award will be presented to Dr. Wagner at the Missouri Emergency Medicine Symposium on May 20, 2020, in Columbia, Mo.

Dr. Wagner is Director of Augmented Learning, Residency Program Director and Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine. He is a graduate of University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, Colo. He completed his residency program at Washington University School of Medicine.

“His endless self-sacrifice in the name of advancing the development of trainees in an environment that is supportive and tailored to each learner’s unique needs is what truly makes him extraordinary,” is just one reason he was nominated for this award. Past residents have also described him as “thinking outside of the box and not satisfied with the status quo;” “has his residents’ back 110% of the time;” “has supported me through some of the toughest times of my life.”

In addition to his role as an outstanding residency program director, Dr. Wagner has revolutionized the role of technology and simulation in residency education; and has published and lectured extensively on national stages on a variety of topics including technology in the ED, perimortem cesarean section simulation models, mobile apps for emergency medicine, end of life simulation and more.

Dr. Wagner’s commitment extends beyond his responsibilities as a Program Director for 50 residents. He has a decorated military career, and continues to support our military by recently serving as a flight surgeon with the 131st Bomber Wing. He also performed critical care physician duties between Okinawa, Japan and the United States.

Dr. Wagner has won numerous awards for his talents including the Washington University Golden Stethoscope Clinical Teaching Award and the American College of Emergency Physicians National Emergency Medicine Faculty Teaching Award.

The R.R. Hannas Award is presented to an emergency medicine physician and resident each year, and is named after Dr. Ralston R. Hannas, a “founding father” of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Hannas is a past president of the American College of Emergency Physicians and was the co-organizer, with Dr. Wiegenstein, of the first Scientific Assembly in 1969. He was also chairman of the committee that founded the American Board of Emergency Medicine, served on the Board for twelve years and was the organization’s fourth president. Dr. Hannas was also instrumental in helping organize the fifth Emergency Medicine residency program in the country, at Northwestern University, in 1973. In 1976 he moved to Kansas City where he practiced emergency medicine for 21 years.
