Barry Spoon, DO, was selected to receive the 2021 Missouri College of Emergency Physicians’ (MOCEP) Lifetime Achievement Award. He was nominated by Douglas Char, MD, FACEP, of Washington University in St. Louis.

Dr. Spoon has retired from emergency medicine and is enjoying life in Texas. He is a graduate of Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his internship program at St. Louis Normandy Osteopathic Hospital in 1977.

Dr. Spoon was active in emergency medicine in southwest and south-central Missouri for most of his career. He practiced in Aurora, Branson, West Plains, Bolivar, Cassville, Springfield, Mountain View and Lebanon. Referred to by his nominator as the “doctors’ doctor,” he is calm, deliberate, quietly confident and has a gentle humbleness to him. He was the physician that other physicians wanted to be like due to his level of professionalism in all situations.

He served MOCEP for nearly two decades as a member of the Board of Directors, including a two-year term as President, and attended numerous American College of Emergency Physicians Council meetings serving as a Councilor for MOCEP. In addition, Dr. Spoon served as the Medical Director for the Missouri Chapter of International Trauma Life Support, a program that trains medical technicians and first responder teams around Missouri. His expertise in emergency medicine was noticed, and Dr. Spoon was appointed by the Governor to serve on the Missouri Board of Healing Arts, which he chaired during his second term. He understands the importance of legislative advocacy and worked hard with various stakeholder groups to promote and secure a place for Emergency Medicine in Missouri.

The MOCEP Lifetime Achievement Award, requires the nominee to be a MOCEP member who has at least 25 years of service to emergency medicine, has devoted their professional life to the improvement of this specialty, and has played an active role in MOCEP.
