John Owen, MD, FACEP, spent some time this spring providing basic medical care for asylum approved immigrants. “When these immigrants come into the U.S. they spend a night at the facility and are provided food and clothing before they travel to their families throughout the country. Most often it is young families with small children, and most with heartbreaking stories,” said Dr. Owen.
Dr. Owen works with an interpreter and uses his limited Spanish to talk with the patients about any health issues they may be experiencing. Of the approximately 150 patients per day seen in the facility, most are suffering from congestion, GI problems, rashes and other minor illnesses, but some have been significantly ill. The facility Dr. Owen is working in is the overflow from the work the Catholic Charities are also providing on the borders.
It’s great to see our members providing assistance to those in need during their time off from a very demanding job in the emergency department. If you volunteer, or assist other organizations in your time off we would love to share your stories, simply email them to [email protected].
