President’s Letter – March/April 2021

Print Article

POSTED IN: EM Pulse - The Official Newsletter of MOCEP, March/April 2021,

Spring has definitely arrived here in Missouri.  That of course means beautiful, mild temperatures buttressed by frost on one side and a taste of summer on the other.  Hopefully, we will avoid the 4th wave of Covid that is currently affecting our nearby colleagues in Michigan. We must not give up hope on vaccination. I encourage all of you to be advocates and speak up whenever you can to support vaccination, especially when its safety is questioned.

A lot of recent talk on social media is around the EM Physician Workforce of the Future Report that was discussed in an ACEP presentation earlier this month.  I highly recommend you go to the ACEP site and watch the video.  This is an important issue with a shortage of over 9,000 EM jobs being possible if nothing changes over the next decade.  Much more information will be coming out from ACEP and its partner organizations who are committed to findings solutions to this very important issue.

The legislative season is getting near the end.  We are following it closely and will provide a summary of what passed and how that will affect EM physicians in Missouri.

Don’t forget about our upcoming educational meetings with in-person options available.  The Missouri EM Symposium will take place on May 27th in Columbia. This event will also include the Annual General Membership Meeting in which we will recognize our 2020 and 2021 award recipients and vote for the open board and councilor positions.  Looking beyond that, the EMerald Coast Conference is taking place June 7-10 in Sandestin, FL.  Myself and fellow board member Tim Koboldt will be both attending and teaching at the meeting.  We hope to see a few other MOCEP members down in Florida. Additionally, we have our second Student Symposium on Emergency Medicine on June 12th in Columbia. We encourage students to attend this event, network with their peers, and learn more about EM.

Again, I hope everyone remains safe and starts to get outdoors.  A chance to get outdoors is a chance to exercise.  Research shows that the average person may have gained the “Quarantine 19” while staying at home. Enjoy the warming weather and hope to see you all in Columbia.
