Brent Ruoff, MD, FACEP, Receives MOCEP’s Lifetime Achievement Award
(Feb. 18, 2023 – Jefferson City, MO) Brent Ruoff, MD, FACEP, was selected to receive the 2023 Missouri College of Emergency Physicians’ (MOCEP) Lifetime Achievement Award. He was nominated by Peter Panagos, MD, of Washington University. The award will be presented to Dr. Ruoff at the MOCEP Annual General Membership Meeting on March 31, 2023, in St. Charles, Mo.
Dr. Ruoff is an Associate Professor and Chief of Emergency Medicine (Emeritus) at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mo. He is a graduate of St. Louis University School of Medicine and completed his residency program at St. Louis University Medical Center.
As a leader, mentor, and teacher who leads by quiet example, Dr. Ruoff is described by his peers to be clinician’s clinician––one who is humble, wholly dedicated to his patients, and never satisfied with his own knowledge. He constantly strives to incorporate new learning into his clinical practice to better care for patients and has been a pillar of strength, persistence, and integrity to his colleagues for the past quarter century.
In 1994, Dr. Ruoff was part of a small group of physicians who went to Washington University to set up a Division and now Department of Emergency Medicine. Since then, he has played an instrumental role in helping build the foundation for emergency medicine at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and served as Chief of Emergency Medicine from 2004-2021. As Chief of EM, he mentored hundreds of students, residents, and faculty to successful and impactful careers in EM—many of whom have gone on to serve in leadership roles in advocacy (MOCEP and ACEP), academics (at Washington University and other national programs), and patient care. At Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine, he has worked tirelessly to advocate for his specialty and community.
As Division Chief for 18 years, he was instrumental in growing the emergency medicine enterprise at
Washington University and leading them on the national stage. The department’s reputation and standing
is in large part due to the quiet behind the scenes efforts of Dr. Ruoff. He’ll never admit it but he has
done more to raise the status of Emergency Medicine at Washington University, and Missouri than
almost any other physician.
The MOCEP Lifetime Achievement Award, requires the nominee to be a MOCEP member who has at least 25 years of service to emergency medicine, has devoted their professional life to the improvement of this specialty, and has played an active role in MOCEP. The Missouri College of Emergency Physicians (MOCEP) is a not for profit organization created to support and advocate for emergency medicine physicians practicing in the state of Missouri.
