Craig Krausz, MD, FACEP was selected to receive the 2023 Missouri College of Emergency Physicians’ (MOCEP) R.R. Hannas Physician of the Year Award. He was nominated by his peer, Kene Chukwuanu, MD, both of Saint Louis University School of Medicine. The award will be presented to Dr. Krausz at the Missouri Emergency Medicine Symposium March 31, 2023, in St. Charles, Mo.
Dr. Krausz is a Professor of Surgery and the Residency Program Director at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. He is a graduate of Saint Louis University (SLU) School of Medicine and completed his residency program at Truman Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo. He then went on to complete the American College of Emergency Physicians’ Teaching Fellowship in Dallas Texas.
As described in his nomination, Dr. Krausz has graciously given his life and career to helping build up the next generation of Missouri’s emergency physicians. Since the inception of the SLU Emergency Medicine Residency Program in 2008, he has played a vital role in providing the educational foundation for learning the core content of emergency medicine. He has also been instrumental in the graduation of over 75 emergency medicine residents—many of which have stayed in the area and taken on leadership roles at their own hospitals.
Dr. Krausz is a master educator who gives great presentations and communicates concepts effectively. He has seamlessly designed the program’s curriculum and contributed hundreds of lectures on various topics over the years. He has a strong grasp on teaching the fundamental and core content of emergency medicine and building up those concepts to challenge his learners into developing their own critical thinking skills. All the while, he keeps his students engaged and enthused about learning.
Dr. Krausz has worked tirelessly over the past three years to establish EMS partnerships and event coverage opportunities for program residents to gain pre-hospital and mass gathering experience. He is a dedicated mentor and advisor for all of the emergency medicine-bound students, is highly engaged in departmental and hospital operations, and has served on multiple committees over the years.
The R.R. Hannas Award is presented to an emergency medicine physician and resident each year, and is named after Dr. Ralston R. Hannas, a “founding father” of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Hannas is a past president of the American College of Emergency Physicians and was the co-organizer, with Dr. Wiegenstein, of the first Scientific Assembly in 1969. He was also chairman of the committee that founded the American Board of Emergency Medicine, served on the Board for twelve years and was the organization’s fourth president. Dr. Hannas was also instrumental in helping organize the fifth Emergency Medicine residency program in the country, at Northwestern University, in 1973. In 1976 he moved to Kansas City where he practiced emergency medicine for 21 years.
