Collin Russell, MD, Receives MOCEP R.R. Hannas Resident of the Year Award

(February 18, 2023 – Jefferson City, MO) Collin Russell, MD, was selected to receive the 2023 Missouri College of Emergency Physicians’ (MOCEP) R.R. Hannas Resident of the Year Award. He was nominated by Cindy Bitter, MD, MA, MPH, both from Saint Louis University, Emergency Medicine Residency Program. The award will be presented to Dr. Russell at the Missouri Emergency Medicine Symposium on March 31, 2023, in St. Charles, Mo.

Dr. Russell is a graduate of the University of Louisville School of Medicine in Louisville, Ky., and is currently a Chief Resident in Emergency Medicine at Saint Louis University. He is described by his peers as a dedicated and compassionate leader, excellent educator, and advocate for wellness in his residency program. He is highly regarded as an individual who is always ready to help others without hesitation. His aspirations are to further his career in a Global Emergency Medicine fellowship training after residency and propel himself into an academic and clinical leadership position.

During his residency, Dr. Russell has actively sought opportunities to advance the care of Global Emergency Medicine and the treatment of underserved populations. He is an active member of the EMRA International Committee and presented at the 2022 MOCEP Emergency Medicine Symposium on effective international volunteering. He previously delivered a talk on Global Health Projects to the medical students pursuing the Global Health Certificate Track at Saint Louis University School of Medicine and over the past year, set up a Global Health rotation through the University of Florida – Gainesville. In August 2022, he served the people of Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, in the Emergency Department at Bernard Mevs Hospital. While there, he helped train other physicians and gained a greater understanding of care in Haiti.

The R.R. Hannas Award is presented to an emergency medicine physician and resident each year, and is named after Dr. Ralston R. Hannas, a “founding father” of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Hannas is a past president of the American College of Emergency Physicians and was the co-organizer, with Dr. Wiegenstein, of the first Scientific Assembly in 1969. He was also chairman of the committee that founded the American Board of Emergency Medicine, served on the Board for twelve years and was the organization’s fourth president. Dr. Hannas was also instrumental in helping organize the fifth Emergency Medicine residency program in the country, at Northwestern University, in 1973. In 1976 he moved to Kansas City where he practiced emergency medicine for 21 years.
