Print Article

POSTED IN: 2023 Quarter 2, EM Pulse - The Official Newsletter of MOCEP,

In May, DHSS issued a health alert regarding an sharp increase in xylazine-associated deaths in Missouri in 2021 and 2022. Xylazine is used in veterinary medicine as a sedative and muscle relaxant and is not approved by the FDA for human use. The drug, commonly referred to as “tranq” or “tranq dope” has a longer duration than that of fentanyl, does not respond to naloxone, and there is no antidote or reversal agent for it.
