Tarrin Casey, MD, has been named the 2025 recipient of the Missouri College of Emergency Physicians’ (MOCEP) R.R. Hannas Resident of the Year Award. She was nominated by Catherine Parker, MD, Program Director of the Emergency Medicine Residency at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and Jared Lammert, MD, of the University of Missouri-Columbia Emergency Medicine Department. The award will be presented to Dr. Casey at the MOCEP Emergency Medicine Symposium on May 2, 2025, in Chesterfield, MO.

Dr. Casey is a graduate of the University of Missouri College of Medicine in Columbia, Missouri, and is currently a PGY-3. As Chief Resident, she has demonstrated exceptional dedication to clinical care and education, while also spearheading impactful projects. She serves as the Project Lead for “Bridging the Gap,” a statewide initiative aimed at recruiting high school students into the field of emergency medicine through simulation-based learning and mentorship. In addition, Dr. Casey has co-authored academic chapters with faculty, including Dr. Parker, underscoring her commitment to advancing medical knowledge and contributing to the academic growth of the specialty.

Her involvement extends to professional advocacy and organizational leadership, having represented Missouri emergency medicine residents at legislative events and serving as a resident board representative for MOCEP. Dr. Casey is widely recognized for her intellectual rigor, ability to apply complex clinical knowledge in high-pressure environments, and consistent excellence in both bedside care and team leadership.

In her nomination, Dr. Parker praised Dr. Casey’s leadership and academic contributions, writing that she “possesses a natural ability to inspire and guide her peers while maintaining an unwavering commitment to patient care and medical education.” Dr. Parker also noted her excellence under pressure and her readiness for advanced training in critical care. Dr. Lammert echoed this sentiment, citing her consistent poise, curiosity, and ability to provide thoughtful, high-level patient care.

The R.R. Hannas Award is presented to an emergency medicine physician and resident each year, and is named after Dr. Ralston R. Hannas, a “founding father” of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Hannas is a past president of the American College of Emergency Physicians and was the co-organizer, with Dr. Wiegenstein, of the first Scientific Assembly in 1969. He was also chairman of the committee that founded the American Board of Emergency Medicine, served on the Board for twelve years and was the organization’s fourth president. Dr. Hannas was also instrumental in helping organize the fifth Emergency Medicine residency program in the country, at Northwestern University, in 1973. In 1976 he moved to Kansas City where he practiced emergency medicine for 21 years.
