2021 Virtual Advocacy Week Resources

Thank you for registering for the 2021 MOCEP Virtual Advocacy Week to be held March 8-12, 2021. Below you will find the resources you need to reach out to your legislators. We recorded our Kick-Off Webinar and encourage you to watch it.

Communicating with Your Legislators

We have developed tips for effectively advocating your legislators. Please take a moment to read through this and prepare prior to contacting your legislators. Remember, you can reach out in the way you feel most comfortable, email, phone or in-person. Click here to find the name and contact information for your legislator. Please remember, we are only reaching out to our state level legislators at this time not our U.S. House and Senate leadership (that outreach is done at the ACEP Leadership and Advocacy Conference). If you have issues finding an email address for your legislator please reach out to [email protected]. We have heard of some issues with the Senate email system, so we are happy to provide the Senator’s email upon request.

Here are some additional tips/ideas:

Sample messaging has been provided for you. (Handouts to include with your email are below.) Please change all items in red to your information. Also, be sure to include a signature line with your name, credentials, phone number and email.
If you are part of a larger emergency department/group, or work with students or residents, consider setting up a Zoom or web-based call with each legislator. You can reach out to the legislative aide for help in finding the best date/time for this call.
A phone call may have more impact than an email, and even if you can’t talk with the legislator, see if the legislative aid has some time to talk with you, and ask if you can email the materials to them following the conversation. It’s perfectly acceptable (and encouraged!) to follow up via email in a few days to verify they received the materials and see if they have additional questions.
